After Rain, the Block Looks Newly Made

After rain, the walk along a familiar block can feel briefly like a first look. The pavement is darker, the curb shines, and a shallow puddle catches a piece of the sky between parked cars. Even the cracks seem more defined.

The Street Holds the Sky

A puddle does not need to be large to change what is visible. It gathers a window, a branch, or a pale opening in the clouds and places it at your feet. The reflection is brief and a little uneven, broken whenever a drop lands.

Ordinary Details, Sharper

The wet metal of a street sign catches more light than it did in the dry afternoon. Leaves stick to the gutter, and the smell of damp pavement follows the block for a while. These are small changes, but together they make the familiar route feel newly outlined.

The Walk Is Still the Walk

A few steps later, the reflections are behind you and the next stretch of sidewalk looks ordinary again. Nothing about the neighborhood has been remade. The rain has only given its surfaces a short turn at showing what they can hold.
